Burkitt lymphoma
The BJAB cell line is a human Burkitt lymphoma cell line (B cell orgin), derived from the inguinal tumor of a 5-year-old African girl. It is an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-negative lymphoblastoid cell line that does not harbor EBV genome or express EBV specified antigen EBNA, but these cells carry surface-bound immunoglobulin. BJAB grows in suspension with a round to polymorphic morphology. The cells rapidly lose viability when approaching maximal culture density; therefore, over-dense cultures should be avoided.
BJAB has wide applications in molecular mechanism and cancer research. Their stable EBV status allows for a valuable application in research on EBV transformation or infection of B cells, enabling researchers to investigate the effect of EBV virus contributing to lymphomagenesis. Otherwise, the BJAB cells exhibit features of Burkitt lymphoma, making it a cell model for genetic and phenotypic studies. The BJAB cell line also serves as a cell model of EBV-negative Burkitt lymphoma in biomedical research for evaluating cytotoxic activity in comparison with EBV-positive counterparts.
